Thinking of Others

Who will you be buying for this Christmas?Tear Foundation Gift

Every year my sons class has a Kris Kringle where each child buys a present for someone else in the class.  They're not allowed to spend more than $5.  You can imagine. there's not a lot that you can get for $5 these days.

This year the Grade 3's are doing something different.  Instead of giving each other a present, they're combining their efforts and giving something to a family and community not as fortunate as themselves.  There are 56 children in grade 3, with each of them putting in $5 thats a total of $280.

They have been looking into the needs of developing countries and the difficulties other children their age face in getting the things they take for granted like clean drinking water, a balanced diet or even enough to eat.  Access to education and it's benefits have also been highlighted.

They are in the process of choosing a gift through the Tear Foundation Useful Gifts website #http://tear.org.au#

Some of the gifts are very simple like a chicken or school supplies that will help an individual; Then there are gifts to help communities like wells and pumps for clean drinking water and a community school employing a teacher for a year.

It is hoped that other classes in the junior school also take part in the idea and if every student puts in $5 they would raise $1,690 to help a community.

If we could all think more like this, imagine what future we could create.

Who will you be buying for this year?
